International scientific and practical conference “Problems of monitoring, modeling and forecasting of water and energy resources of Central Asia in the context of climate change”

November 9, 2023 Bishkek. Green Alliance of Kyrgyzstan, together with the Institute of Water Problems and Hydropower of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, with the support of the OSCE Program Office in Bishkek, held the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Problems of Monitoring, Modeling and Forecasting Water and Energy Resources of Central Asia in the Conditions of Climate Change” (II1 Mamatkanov Readings )

The purpose of the event was to discuss the main results of hydrological research, trends and directions in the development of hydrology, glaciology and hydropower in Central Asia, innovative methods of monitoring, modeling and forecasts, geographic information systems, increased cooperation, exchange of information, knowledge and experience, where 25 reports were prepared from different international countries (Kazakhstan, Russia, Germany, Japan, Great Britain, USA, South Africa).

This conference was attended by representatives of government agencies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic, Kyrgyzhydromed, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, CAIAG, Green Alliance of Kyrgyzstan, Green4 and others.

The conference was held in the following scientific areas:

  • Innovative methods for monitoring and clarifying water and energy resources of river basins in Central Asia.
  • Modeling and forecasting the state of water bodies.
  • The influence of climate change on the dynamics of glaciation.
  • Natural hazards and water-related disaster risk management.
  • Modern information technologies in hydrology.
  • Problems of personnel training in the field of hydrology, glaciology and hydropower engineering.

“Water is Kyrgyzstan’s greatest asset. Its value will increase every year, especially in the face of climate change. Kyrgyzstan’s water resources are of great importance for economic development, socio-political stability and the daily lives of millions of people not only in Kyrgyzstan, but for each state it borders with, and wider Central Asia. Therefore, combining the efforts of civil society and scientific institutions is necessary to increase the capacity and knowledge of broad sections of society and decision makers. We hope that our cooperation can make a useful contribution to making informed and more effective decisions both domestically and at the international level in the interests of all parties involved,” said Ilgiz Kambarov, executive director of Green Alliance KG.
